When you first receive your script you probably don’t need anyone to tell you to read it but here are some thoughts on how to jump start the process. When I read through a script I grab:

a highlighter – I like the cheap ones as they bleed less, colored pencils can work as well

a pencil – keep your options open, a pen is too permanent

post-it notes – great way to record thoughts and questions you want to ask the director or other actors, the small flag ones can give you a jump on finding your scenes

a small notebook – sometimes this is the best way to keep my thoughts together about lines (or props, costumes and sets, it’s not just the actors who read the script)

***Before you make any marks in a script, check with your director to make sure it is ok. In our productions, the scripts belong to the actors and tech crew, so mark away.

Read Through the Whole Script – You can do this alone or with your family. Read it aloud if you like, dividing the parts between your brothers and sisters. Even if you are only in some of the scenes it is helpful to get the big picture. Ask yourself what is going on? Who is the story about? Why is it important?

Make Notes – You can feel free to highlight your character’s name each time you have lines. I wouldn’t suggest highlighting all of your lines because the highlighter can bleed through to the next page. If you are playing more than one character, consider two different colored highlighters. You can also make notes about your lines in the script. (I would do this in pencil) What is your character thinking or feeling?

Keep a List of Questions – If there is a line that doesn’t make since you, make a note so you can ask me at the next rehearsal. If there is a word or phrase that you don’t know write it down. There is a blank page at the end of the script that you can use for questions. Post it notes also work well because they will be in your script which you are bringing to rehearsal.

Keep Reading – Don’t stop with one reading. The more you read the more you will notice about the story. You will also be starting the memory process. Read at home (unless you are supposed to be doing chores or school), read in the car (unless it makes you sick) read wherever (except in church or underwater)

Have Fun – this process can be a chore or it can be fun. The memory will come, the acting will come enjoy the story you are going to tell.

Rejoice!

The Light Theater Co. is . . . a dream, a learning experience, a great time, a family friendly event, a group of diverse parts that make up a wonderful whole. We bring homeschooled kids together to get involved with all of the aspects of a theater production from before the first read through to after the final bows. Take a moment to look around at who we are, what we have done and what we are doing. If there is something that you like, something that makes you wonder or something that inspires you please consider dropping us a note or joining us for the next show.

Thanks,
